HISTORY: Lucius Valerius Flaccus, Roman consul in 100 BC, was Flamen Martialis (Priest of Mars), as was his father before him, and later to become Princeps Senatus in 86 BC.

OBVERSE: Profile portrait of Nerio, the consort of Mars. As a war goddess, she was the personification of valor, representing the vital force, power, and majesty of Mars.

REVERSE: Depiction of a youthful Mars, wearing his plumed, neo-attic helmet and holding a sword, appearing as a peace bringer with his spear set aside and a wheat stalk behind. “VALERI” on the left quadrant.
